A style of game that, for me, combines the best aspects of AoW1 and 2/Shadow Magic. Almost every unit and ability in the game is useful Endless variation of class/race/specialisation combos More complex tactical combat with good combat AI. (With the possible exception of Eternal Lords.) I particularly loved the ability to play an evil character who ended up siding with the pure good Highmen.ĪoW3 is by far my favourite title in the series, though. Its style and atmosphere also appealed more, and the AoW1 campaigns are still my favourite campaigns in the series. Its bigger emphasis on armies and warrior-type leaders appealed to me more than the wizard towers and wizard style leaders of AoW2 and Shadow Magic. Before AoW3, it was the original AoW1 that I kept coming back to. I liked Shadow Magic, but it never grabbed me. The class system compensates for the smaller amount of races quite well and the game mechanics are generally better designed. I like that the heroes are not immortal though, you really need to be careful with them.Īll in all AoW III is an improvement to the older games. You almost always take the skills in the same order, which is pretty boring. Free leveling is also bad because it allows cookie cutting. I don't like how they have the same classes as your leaders. The heroes could have been done better though. The combat system is probably too complex at times because the auto combat does a terrible job at it, especially if your army has any cavalry. Because of this the first tiers don't become completely useless after the midgame. Mainly because of the fact that they completely changed how defense and resistance works. The combat system itself is also one of the strongest points of the game. A strong random map generator combined with the fact that buildings affect your cities inside their domain is very interesting. The strategic map is in my opinion, probably the best improvement from the older games. It was a huge pain to keep track on all the buffs your units had after the midgame, even though they had a separate interface for this. I wasn't a big fan of the global enchantments of the older games. I think the class system is quite interesting though it probably has a too major role compared to the specializations.
